Topics and Trips
We start the year with a topic called Dungeons and Dragons.
We will be reading stories about dragons including ‘The boy who grew dragons’ by Andy Shepherd and ‘How to train a dragon’ by Cressida Cowell. The children will be designing their own dragons, creating dragon sculptures, dragon shadow puppets to help retell their dragon stories, writing instructions on how to care for a baby dragon and many more fiery activities! The geography unit called ‘Around the world in 80 days’ by Jules Verne will start with a location activity and map work task linked to our school and will build up to a piece of work focused on countries around the world that Phileas Fogg travelled to. We will be sampling food from around the world and looking at where our food comes from. To finish the term we will be learning some Bollywood dancing.
We will launch the return to school with the Ancient Egyptians in 'Where's my mummy?' There will be an Ancient Egyptian Day on Thursday 17th January .The will children have the opportunity to dress up as Ancient Egyptians and take part in a fun packed activity day.
In class, we will be reading the Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo and the children will be planning and writing their own version of the story.
The children will be investigating the life of Ancient Egypt and will have the opportunity to write fact files. Some of the websites below may help their research.
In maths, we will be learning to multiply a one-digit number by a two-digit number. For some ways to help your child understand this concept, please refer to the curriculum matters .
After half term, we move onto a topic called Marvellous Medicine. We will be reading George’s Marvellous Medicine and the BFG by Roald Dahl.
The children will be learning about The Plague and how it impacted on the villagers of Eyam.
Year 3 have had a fantastic day making flatbreads, Egyptian jewellery and cartouches. Thank you for their amazing costumes.
We start the summer term with a topic called Meet the Flintstones (The Stone Age).
Through this topic we will cover rocks and soils, volcanoes and earthquakes. The children will have the opportunity to take part in a survival day and the will prepare their own survival kit.
To complete the year, our topic of Rise of the Robots is an opportunity to design and build our own robots, taking our inspiration from The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.
On Thursday 13th June we will be going on a trip to Creswell Crags on a Cavemen and Creatures Day. More details to follow.
